Description: Discover the untouched wilderness of Rock Island State Park, a 906-acre Lake Michigan island located just one mile northeast of Jackson Harbor on Washington Island. This primitive island is an idyllic retreat for outdoor enthusiasts looking to enjoy hiking, camping, swimming, and fishing.
Embark on a journey through the island's ten miles of scenic hiking trails that offer expansive views of the surrounding waters and lush landscapes. Explore Wisconsin's oldest lighthouse, the Pottawatomie Lighthouse, and delve into the history of Thordarson Great Hall and the remarkable boathouse, both of which add a rich historical dimension to your visit. The boathouse, designed by noted architect Frederick Dinkelberg and built by Chester Thordarson in 1929, is an architectural marvel anchored to the bedrock below the water's surface and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Rock Island's designation as a Travel Green Certified site highlights its commitment to sustainability and conservation, ensuring that it remains a pristine environment for visitors and wildlife alike. With 40 primitive, walk-in tent sites available, including two group campsites, camping on Rock Island is a truly immersive experience. Each site offers basic amenities such as a picnic table and fire ring, with drinking water available near the dock and boathouse.
Note: No vehicles are allowed on Rock Island, and all supplies must be carried into and out of campsites. Plan accordingly, as you will need to backpack in all your supplies and equipment. Remember, space on the ferry is limited, and small carts are permitted but check size restrictions. Always follow local guidelines to prevent the spread of tree pests and diseases by not moving firewood.
Whether you're hiking for the day or camping overnight, Rock Island State Park offers a unique escape into nature's beauty, steeped in history and preserved for future generations to cherish.
