Description: Visit Cana Island, home to Door County’s most iconic lighthouse, standing majestically since 1869 on the shore of Lake Michigan. Celebrate over 150 years of maritime history by exploring this historic landmark, set on a picturesque island accessible via a quaint hay-wagon ride over the causeway, conditions permitting.

What to Explore:

  • Lighthouse and Grounds: Discover the 89-foot-tall Cana Island Light, the oil storage house, and the beautifully preserved lighthouse keeper’s home. Each structure tells a part of the rich history of Great Lakes navigation and the lives of those who maintained the beacon.
  • Tower Climb: The highlight for many visitors is the chance to climb the 97 steps of the tower’s spiral staircase. Reaching the top rewards you with a breathtaking panoramic view from the gallery deck, overlooking Lake Michigan and the Door County peninsula.
  • Historic Shipwreck: Learn about the wooden bulk freighter Australasia, which burned and sank off Cana Island in 1896, adding a layer of maritime lore to the area.
  • Tombolo Walk: Depending on water levels, you might walk across the tombolo—a natural land bridge—to reach the island. Conditions of the tombolo can be checked via a live webcam operated by the county parks department, ensuring visitors can safely plan their crossing.

Note: The path to Cana Island may be submerged during high water levels, so checking the webcam and local conditions is recommended before your visit. The lighthouse tower climb may not be suitable for all visitors due to its steep and narrow steps.

Highlight: Standing on the gallery deck of Cana Island Light, you are treated to one of the most spectacular vistas in all of Door County, making the climb an unforgettable part of your visit.
